After 23-years on Comcast Cable Channel 99 in Jacksonville, Medical Update will be moving to the Internet and its own YouTube Channel in the fall! Medical Update will be getting out of the studio and shooting at various locations and events around the First Coast!

In this special 23 year recap, host and producer Walt Culbertson, will provide an overview of past shows and highlight what is happening around the world of healthcare and on the First Coast. Annual Lyme Disease Update

This is the annual May series for Lyme Disease. During this episode, we will focus on the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease and explore some of the research that is happening right here on the First Coast. Our special quests for this show include Dr. Shirley Hartman and Dr. Kerry Clark who serve on the Board of the Florida Lyme Disease Association (FLDA).

Dr. Shirley Hartman, MD, practices out of the Mandarin Wellness Center. She is one of the leading area physicians diagnosing and treating Lyme's disease on the First Coast. Dr. Hartman will share important information all residents in the Jacksonville Community need to hear about one of the fastest growing infectious diseases in America.

Dr. Kerry Clark, MPH., Ph.D. is a Associate Professor in the Epidemiology & Environmental Health, Department of Public Health for the University of North Florida. He is performing important research into the movement of ticks on the First Coast and their relationship to the Lyme disease. Spotlight on Neurology

This episode will put a spolight on Neurology, the medical specialty which focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the brain and nervous system. The show explores brain concussions and the different types and treatment for headaches and other relevant clinical topics, pertaining to the practice of Neurology.

Appearing on the show is Dr. Daniel Kantor. Daniel Kantor, MD is board certified in neurology and headache medicine and practices at Neurologique Foundation in Ponte Vedra Beach. He is a ringside physician and the team neurologist for the Jacksonville Sharks and Axemen. Dr. Kantor is president of the Florida Society of Neurology, chair of the Subcommittee on Concussion for the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee of the Florida High School Athletics Association and vice president of the Duval County Medical Society. He was appointed by Governor Scott as a member of the Agency for Health Care Administration (FL Medicaid) Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.

Wellness and Fitness on the First Coast

This episode will focus on Wellness and Fitness opportunities on the First Coast. More emphasis on prevention and effective disease management is essential to improve American health and also to reduce costs to governments, businesses and individuals. The National Business Group on Health estimates that the corporate wellness market will grow 18% over the next 5 years. The major factors catalyzing this storm are rising disease and disability among Americans and relentless annual increases in healthcare costs.

Appearing on the episode of Medical Update will be Mr. Jeff Croy, CEO and Ms.Laurie Schott, Director of Client Services. Yo-Fi Wellness a local organization that offers expert yoga, fitness, nutrition and meditation video content to empower individuals to live a healthier lifestyle. Jeff’s experience balancing life and career demands while engaging in rigorous travel for work ignited his interest in wellness. In a short amount of time, Jeff and his team have developed Yo-Fi Wellness as a leading health technology company focused on behavior change. Laurie Schott came to Yo-Fi with a passion for coaching people through their wellness journeys. Medication Therapy Management (MTM)

This episode will feature Winn-Dixie Pharmacy and the American Pharmacist Association providing important information on a medication Therapy Management (MTM). MTM is a distinct service or group of services that optimizes drug therapy with the intent of improved therapeutic outcomes for individual patients. It includes a broad range of professional activities, including but not limited to performing patient assessment and/or a comprehensive medication review, formulating a medication treatment plan, monitoring efficacy and safety of medication therapy, enhancing medication adherence through patient empowerment and education, and documenting and communicating MTM services to prescribers in order to maintain comprehensive patient care.

Appearing on the show is Mr. Michael LeBlanc, the Director of Pharmacy Marketing and Sales for Winn-Dixie Pharmacy. Mike is a licensed Pharmacist working in the retail pharmacy industry for 24 years. He has a diverse background holding positions as a staff pharmacist, pharmacy manager, pharmacy district manager, corporate training, government relations, marketing, business planning, project management. In my current role I am responsible for marketing, sales, business strategies, and professional services.

Dr. Dan Buffington is a licensed Florida pharmacist who has a medication therapy management and clinical research practice located in Tampa, Florida. His practice provides patient care consults to help identify drug related problems, refine medication treatment, and to help improve the outcomes and safety of drug therapy. Dan is also on the faculty at the University of South Florida College of Medicine and is an active member of the Florida Pharmacy Association (FPA) and the American Pharmacists Association's (APhA) Board of Trustees. Hospice Care and the Caregiver

This episode will highlight the national Caregiver and Hospice month of November. Hospice is a special healthcare option for patients and families who are faced with a terminal illness. A multi-disciplinary team of physician, nurses, social workers, bereavement counselors and volunteers works together to address the physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of each patient and family. The hospice team provides care to patients and their families. The festive holiday season can be challenging for those experiencing the death of a loved one. They may find themselves torn between the need to grieve and pressure to get into the holiday spirit. It makes no difference whether the death took place last week or several months ago. A loss can be felt more acutely at this time.

Appearing on this episode are Ms. Marilyn Jones and Mr. Doug Shilling. Marilyn is the Bereavement and Community Grief Supervisor of Community Hospice of Northeast Florida . Marilyn is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with 30 years of experience in human services. As the Supervisor of Bereavement and Community Grief at Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, Marilyn works closely with family members after the death of a loved one. She provides individual, family and group counseling, workshops and seminars for the bereaved.

Doug Shilling is the Hospital Admissions Manager of Community Hospice of Northeast Florida . Doug manages a staff of 20 who respond to referrals for Community Hospice services from patients in Northeast Florida-area hospitals. He also oversees the delivery of psychosocial care during the admissions process, including risk assessments, complex case management, advance directives questions and Medicaid application assistance, as well as for existing Community Hospice patients who are hospitalized. He joined the organization in 2006.
